Wind is created by air in motion. It is caused by the uneven heating of the earth's environment by the sun. Because the earth's environment is made of several types of materials such as land and water, as well as the things that make up these surfaces, they absorb the sun's heat at differing rates.

During the day the land obviously heats faster than in the evening, because the sun is out. The water also heats up, but not as fast. Water also cools slower then land so at night the wind reverses course. When the heat rises, the cool air comes in to fill in where the heat is not, and this is when the wind is created.

Nowadays, we use the wind to create energy to produce electricity for homes, businesses or communities. Wind is an earth friendly renewable energy source; we know that as long as the sun shines on the earth the winds will continue to blow.

Much like the old fashioned windmills, the wind machines we use today use blades to collect the wind's energy. Windmills work because they harness the power of the wind to generate electricity. Even the new wind machines must have wind to work, so when the wind isn't blowing other types of power have to be used, like solar panel energy.

There are two types of turbines used today they are based on the direction of the rotating shaft for example; horizontal axis wind machines, and vertical axis wind machines. Sizes of wind machines can vary widely. There are smaller turbines used to power a home or small business, and they may have a capacity of less than 100 kilowatts. Larger commercial sized turbines may have a capacity of 5 million watts, or even as high as 5 megawatts. The large turbines are often found in wind farms that provide power to an electrical grid.

Most turbines used today are the horizontal axis type. The horizontal axis turbines have blades that are made like airplane propellers. A horizontal wind machine will typically stand about as tall as a 20-story building and has three blades that can span as much as 200 feet across. The largest turbines in the world actually have blades that are longer than a football field. Wind Turbines are built to stand tall and wide to capture more wind effectively.

Critics of electric wind power point out that the windmills which are essential to power generation are extremely large and make a lot of noise. Ordinarily, they can only be used in rural areas, where the open spaces and elevated terrain essential for their use can be found. Potty training is new territory for your toddler. Up until now, they have been happy-go-lucky, learning about her new world at there own pace and making all kinds of exciting discoveries. Regression, is when a child begins to learn potty training, then suddenly seems to lose ground. Children who were perfectly happy to go along with the potty training routine all of a sudden begin having accidents frequently. Regression isn't always a problem.

There may be an external factor such as a change in the environment that's causing the regression or it may just be that they want to slow down a little. Most experts agree that periods of regression are normal during potty training and, unless there is a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection, they do not need intervention. Simply continue to gently encourage her with her potty training and they will get back on track.

Mother's Day - a Modern Tradition

Mothering Day, a holiday in the United Kingdom, had a strong influence on our modern Mothers Day celebration. Julia Ward Howe helped bring the idea to the U.S. In the late 1800's. The ideas was to use the celebration to unite American women against war.

A prominent social activist of the time was Ann Jarvis. She promoted the safety and health of workers. Later she actively organized women to help care for the soldiers wounded in the Civil War. Afterwards. To promote both social activism and peace, she initiated the idea of a "Mother's Work Day."

Ann Jarvis died in 1905. Two years later, her daughter, Anna Marie Jarvis, passed out 500 white carnations, the first Mother's Day flowers, at her mother's church, one for each mother present. In 1908 she held a memorial to her mother in on May 10 and began a crusade to make Mother's Day an official holiday. She achieved her goal in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson, then President, made it official.

Shortly afterwards it became a popular custom on Mother's Day to wear a white carnation. Anna chose carnations because they were her mother's favorite flower. She selected white to symbolize the purity of a mother's love. Carnations are still a favorite Mother's Day flower.

The result of this new custom was a white carnation shortage. To alleviate the problem florists suggested that people wear a red carnation if one's mother was living and a white carnation if one's mother had passed away. As a result the new tradition of giving Mother's Day flowers changed.

Mother's Day soon became a popular holiday. And very commercial. Just 9 years after becoming official, Anna Jarvis began to see the new holiday as too commercial. She strongly opposed the ideas of Mother's Day cards. She felt they were a shortcut, and that a personal letter the ideal way to honor your mother.

Both Anna and Ellsinore, her sister. Spent all their money and the rest of their lives fighting the new Mother's Day holiday. Anna Jarvis was an activist until the end of her life. Just before her death in 1948 Anna was arrested as she protested the over commercialization of the holiday she created.

The practice of using flowers in the Mother's Day celebration continued to evolve to this day. Today there are no hard and fast customs concerning Mother's Day flowers. Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

Hemorrhoids can sometimes be a very serious problem for pregnant women. They basically are abnormally inflamed veins located in the anal canal as well as around the anus. In the event that you are pregnant with hemorrhoids, there are a couple of things you can do to prevent them from worsening. Firstly, it is very important that you carefully and thoroughly clean the hemorrhoid after bowel movement. Using a damp tissue or cloth as an alternative to toilet paper will be softer and cause less aggravation. Take a sitz bath three or four times each day to sooth the hemorrhoid, this will help the healing and reduce pain.

Check the amount of algae growth in the pond. Algae will add oxygen during the day but will deplete oxygen during the night. Too much algae can be a real problem for several reasons but affecting the oxygen level is certainly an important one.

Also understand that Koi fish will utilize more oxygen when they are feeding. So if you feed your fish during the hottest part of the day, you will run the danger of having the oxygen level drop below healthy levels.

Tips For Building The Perfect Fence

People build fences everyday while they are done well by most standards, there are some things that could always be done better. Here are some things that can be done to make your next fence better. You start a fence by making holes spaced about every 8 feet apart for the 4x4x8' treated posts. These holes should be dug 2 feet deep with a post hole digger. Most people stop right there with a cylinder shaped hole since digging these holes is the most strenuous part of fence building. To ensure the post is well anchored the fence installer should use the post hole digger at an angle around the whole diameter of this hole to make a ball shaped anchor at the bottom of the cylinder. Post holes are much better if dug this way.

One of the other big mistakes often made is that people don't realize that concrete will never bind to wood. That's why you see concrete builders use wooden forms. When they do the pouring, and the cement sets, they are good. The next day the concrete workers take the nails out and these wood forms just fall off of the concrete. Another problem is bugs and water in the soil can deteriorate the wood posts. To prevent these problems the fence builder should put black roof tar on the bottom two feet of the fence post that enters the ground. This will prevent the post from rotting and enables the concrete to stick to the posts. After the posts are leveled and set you should allow them to dry for one whole day before nailing on them. Any nailing too soon, and you knock the posts out of level.

Most often, people are only using two rails per fence slat. This is okay, but you really should consider more. To build a secure fence that will last for years, three rails should be used. The top rail should be placed on the top of the fence posts lying in a horizontal position. The fence slats should not be installed more than 8" above this top rail. If so they will tend to twist and turn with age. The bottom rail shouldn't be more than 8" above the bottom of the fence slats for the same reason. The center rail should be placed evenly between the top and bottom rails.

One thing often over looked is that we assume that water only travels downward. That assumption is almost correct but don't understand the lip or linger factor. There is one instance where water can and will travel up, and every fence builder should be aware of. This is also the reason why fascia boards almost always rot and warp.

Have you ever walked by a house with wood siding or a wood fence and noticed the bottom of the painted wood is bubbling and rotten? The paint or wood sealer should have protected the wood from moisture to prevent it from rotting however the installers weren't aware of the lip or linger factor.

Many contractors never seal the bottom lip of the wood. Over the years as water drains down the face of the wood it lingers on the exposed bottom lip and begins to soak up into the wood causing it to rot. If you want to water seal or paint your new fence, always be certain to coat the top and bottom lip.

So there you have it. The key things to remember are to make sure the posts are actually sealed, and you make sure that the bottom of the wood gets sealed to prevent rotting. If you are in the process of making a fence then you can make these simple changes. - 20607

There's no better way to learn about Ohio campgrounds than from other campers who've been there. Below you'll find a list of campground reviews made by visitors to each site. Their names have been withheld to protect their identities.

Burr Oak State Park, Glouster, Ohio - visitors say the campground and campsite are very nice with its beautiful scenery and lake. However, they complained that the bathhouse was filthy, the floors were not maintained, the toilets were not clean, and there was very little hot water.

Buck Creek State Park, Springfield, Ohio - this is a beautiful park with lots of wildlife and excellent facilities. The bathhouses are clean but the tent sites are quite a distance from the lake, playground, and outdoor theatre. They have family movies on Friday and Saturday nights (popcorn provided). Rangers have a full set of activities planned every weekend so there's plenty of things for kids and adults to do. The lake is nice but very rocky on the bottom so it's quite hard on the feet without water shoes. Visitors say it's a nice place for boating and fishing.

Camp Sandusky, Sandusky, Ohio - this camp is said to be poorly maintained. The restrooms are filthy, leaves have not been raked up for at least a year, and the sites are very close together. Visitors say they would not recommend this site to anyone.

Campers Paradise Campground, Carrollton, Ohio - this is a family oriented campground and there are planned activities for adults and kids. There are 150 beautiful, shaded sites with electricity and water, a fishing pond, game room, camp store, indoor showers and flush toilets.

Harrison Lake State Park, Fayette, Ohio - has always been well kept and clean, and the staff are friendly, helpful, and courteous. The unique history of the lake and the surrounding area are colorful and interesting. Visitors say its unique setting in the midst of corn, wheat, and soybean fields give it a peaceful rural atmosphere that is pleasant and relaxing.

Rustic Lakes Campgrounds Inc, Sullivan, Ohio - visitors remarked that the site has clean facilities and is well taken care of. They have three different lakes which will give campers a good time in fishing and swimming.
