Hemorrhoids During Pregnancy

By Heather-Jane Hunter

Hemorrhoids can sometimes be a very serious problem for pregnant women. They basically are abnormally inflamed veins located in the anal canal as well as around the anus. They can cause pain and bleeding in the anus, as well as a lot of discomfort while standing or sitting. Hemorrhoids and pregnancy are closely related. In fact, pregnancy is cited as one of the main causes of hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids can occur anytime, both during and after the pregnancy. One of the main causes of hemorrhoids during this period is that the pregnant women often become constipated during pregnancy. This constipation can further lead to hemorrhoids.

Another factor which leads to hemorrhoids in pregnant women is increased blood pressure in the lower half of the body (and increased blood volume). This increased blood pressure causes the veins to swell and makes them highly prone to becoming hemorrhoids.

While pregnant, women secrete the progesterone hormone from the body which causes the vein walls to relax. When the vein walls relax they swell even further. Extra straining can also be caused due to the secretion of progesterone because it slows down the intestinal tract.

Diet can play a big part in helping to prevent hemorrhoids during pregnancy. The keys to a diet that prevents hemorrhoids include eating plenty of foods high in fiber such as fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drinking plenty of water (at least 8 glasses per day). Regular exercise can also be very useful in helping to prevent hemorrhoids. Lastly, make sure you dont strain when going to the toilet.

In the event that you are pregnant with hemorrhoids, there are a couple of things you can do to prevent them from worsening. Firstly, it is very important that you carefully and thoroughly clean the hemorrhoid after bowel movement. Using a damp tissue or cloth as an alternative to toilet paper will be softer and cause less aggravation. Take a sitz bath three or four times each day to sooth the hemorrhoid, this will help the healing and reduce pain.

As hemorrhoids during pregnancy are a common illness, a lot of creams and topical ointments are available in pharmacys and drugstores. Be wary when using these as many of them only work to reduce the symptoms of hemorrhoids. Some patients report that burning sensations actually increased when using creams.

Hemorrhoids can also be a problem for pregnant women after childbirth. Giving birth can lead to hemorrhoids because of the straining that is required to have the baby. Natural hemorrhoid treatments are recommended to anyone who suffers hemorrhoids after childbirth.
